My name is Polina Baum-Talmor, I am a PhD researcher at the Seafarers International Research Centre (SIRC), part of the School of Social Sciences in Cardiff University. The title of my thesis at the moment is: "The notion of 'career' in a globalized industry: The case of seafarers".

Research interests

  • Career development and professional identity

  • Flexibility of employment in the global labor market - advantages and disadvantages

Research area: Arthurian Literature

Organisation: University of Bristol

Email address: rp0898@bristol.ac.uk

About me: I am a third year PhD student at the University of Bristol, where I also obtained my Masters degree in English Literature. I am a part-time tutor in the English Department, where I teach Approaches to Poetry. I also have an undergraduate Law degree from Lancaster University.

Research Interests: My area of specialty is Arthurian Literature and I am currently working on tracing the origins of the character of Merlin through literature, from his roots as a Welsh wildman up to the popular modern conception of him as a wise, aged wizard. I am also greatly interested in Tennyson's "Idylls of the King", a collection of Arthurian poetry that is often undervalued and ignored, and I hope to focus my research in this area following the completion of my dissertation

My Research

My name is Paul Collins and I am a third year PhD student at Cardiff University. My project involves the study of the biological mechanisms controlling the recruitment of immune cells to the skin to help fight infection. To do this, I combine in vitro laboratory assays with analysis of human skin samples. I am just one of the PhD students and Post-docs working in the Moser/Eberl lab (principal inestigators Bernhard Moser and Matthias Eberl) - here is a link to our group's website: http://medicine.cf.ac.uk/infect-immun/research/innate/moser-eberl/

Teaching

In addition to my research, I am also very passionate about teaching. I am a lab demonstrator in the undergraduate biosciences and medical student laboratory practicals, while I have also been involved in 'Science in Health', an event which engages more than 500 A level students from around Wales, inviting them to spend a few days in our labs to get a taste of a real research environment.

General interests

Outside of the lab I am a keen sports player, enjoying long-distance running, football and golf.

Kleio

About me

I obtained my first degree in Molecular Genetics from King’s College London. I moved to Bath to start an BBSRC-funded integrated PhD in Systems Biology at the University of Bath. The aim of my work is to describe the molecular mechanisms governing fate specification in the neural crest (an embryonic vertebrate structure comprised of a population of multipotent stem cells) using classical genetics’ techniques coupled with mathematical modelling.

Research interests

I am interested in a wide variety of research areas, including the following:

1. Developmental genetics, in particular the molecular basis of stem cell development
2. Neuroscience and neurogenetics
3. Regenerative medicine
4. Systems biology: the use of mathematics and mathematical modelling to supplement experimental observations

I am very keen on discussing these (or other!) research areas with anyone interested.

General interests

Music and dance performances (all sorts!), theatre, travelling, sociology, astrophysics
